Dear Special Needs Mommies: You're Not Alone

Dear Special Needs Mommies: You're Not Alone
It Was His Will

When God created us, he had a predetermined purpose for our lives. As we grew up and moved about the world, he already knew the beautiful miracle that would come from our wombs. It was no coincidence that the precious life that was gifted to us was a child with special needs.

"Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations."- Jeremiah 1:5

It is so difficult for our souls when we hear that our beautiful blessing will not be as the others. The dreams that we had for them start to slowly wash away from our hearts like if all along, they were painted on with watercolors. The image of the life we assumed we would have, becomes a distant memory that only brings us pain.

Our human reaction is anger, fear, and betrayal. How can our God do this to us? Where did we go wrong to have been punished this way?

Take Heart

The answer is to stop asking why! God chose us, and that is a beautiful testament to his love for us. He picked us because he wants us to grow both in our understanding of who we are as women but in our relationship with Him. In James 1:2-3, the author is telling us that trial and tribulations are good for us and our growth in Christ.

"Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. " James 1:2-3

Perseverance is precisely what being a mommy of a special needs child needs. The reality is that the beauty of their disabilities brings out in us more than just perseverance. We become super mommies; we develop abilities we didn't even know we had like a new awakening of life that otherwise would have been left undiscovered.

"I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome to world." - John 16:33

The many times we have had to speak up against injustice towards our child. The moments of pushing past our fear to challenge a medical professional in regards to their diagnosis or lack of a diagnosis. The kindness you develop toward the world because you finally realize that life is so much more than being pretty and popular. We start becoming a better version of the women we use to be, making us the perfect choice to be the mommies of a child with special needs.

You Are Not Alone

We are not alone, God is with us on this journey and keeps us safe in his dwelling. Mommies the road is long, and it is hard, we won't always have the best of days. Many times we will feel defeated and alone. We may have become superheroes, but even they have moments of weakness and defeat.

Don't fear because though we may be earthly superheroes we have a heavenly Hero that has no flaws or weakness. The lord is our everything when we are crushed in spirit when we have hit a wall and feel the heaviness of being mommies to a special needs child. He knew about it before we even hit the wall He has been prepared to catch our fall and dry up our tears before time was yet in existence.

The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.- Psalm 34:18

Beautiful Mommies know this, He gave us a purpose before we were even in existence. Making sure that the days of our suffering would not go in vain. For the unconditional love, we get to experience is only available to very few and does not compare to the unconditional love our God has for us. We are not alone ever, we are children of the all mighty Father, and thru him we have been anointed to be a blessing to our children.

No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. - Romans 8:37

They Will Soar

Finally, Mommies, we will be the witnesses of the most exceptional strength, hope, determination, humility, kindness, and triumph anyone could ever imagine. Christ has made a promise to them, and God never fails!

Do you know? Have you heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom. He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength.

They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.-Isaiah 40:28-31

As a grandmother of a wonderful young man who is on the spectrum, I was moved by your words. I have always thought my daughter was a superhero and a gifted protector to our Jack. God made you and her to be the mighty warriors that you are. Thank you for reminding moms of children with special needs that they are gifted by Gods wonderful grace to make it through all the challenges.
